An Overview

The Lower Thames Classic trip follows the river from the beautiful City of Oxford to the outskirts of London. While occasionally busy with light craft and rowing parties, the river and countryside is certainly no less beautiful than it is ‘above’ Oxford in the Cotswolds. Historically it is second to none!

We will take a leisurely pace, making sure there is time to enjoy lunch and view the historic sites along the way. Departing the centre of Oxford, we’ll pass the village of Radley to spend the night in Abingdon. Day two will follow more open rolling farm land, and the village of Dorchester (and its 7th Century Cathedral – capital of the ancient Kingdom of Mercia) to end our day in Wallingford.

We follow dramatic rolling hills (known an as the Goring Gap) before arriving in the picturesque village of Goring (and its neighbour, Streatly).

Day three takes us past the village of Pangbourne to Mapledurham (with its fine Elizabethan House  – inspiration for Toad Hall), just above the city of Reading. From here, the river widens as we follow its course, stopping at Sonning and Wargrave until we spend a well-deserved rest in Henley-On-Thames. In Henley we visit the excellent River and Rowing Museum which has a permanent ‘Wind in the Willows’ exhibition.

Travelling on to London, the river broadens further as we head past Marlow and Cookham. In these reaches there are many fine houses to be seen, although perhaps none as fine as Cliveden House.

Of course we will stop at Windsor for a good look at the famous Castle. If there is time we will visit Hampton Court via minibus, and our trips end in Runnymede, where the Magna Carta was signed in 1215 by the reluctant King John.
